SPACING AND ALIGNMENT
Typographic Page Layout Exercise
Create a two-page A4 essay spread in portrait orientation (side-by-side as a PDF) that showcases your mastery of typographic principles. Select an engaging topic and create a layout that emphasizes readability and visual appeal through thoughtful design. Follow these guidelines:
- Content: Compose a two-page essay and include one relevant image (square, landscape, or portrait) generated using AI tools like Bing AI or Midjourney.
- Typography: Select three complementary typefaces that work together both visually and conceptually to strengthen your essay's message.
- Editorial Design: Structure your layout with columns, margins, gutters, and padded text boxes. Include headings, subheadings, body text, captions, and page numbers. Fine-tune paragraph spacing, kerning, tracking, word spacing, and leading for precise text alignment.
- Visual Clarity: Eliminate typographic flaws such as widows, orphans, bad rags, and rivers.
- Creative Enhancements: Apply thoughtful color choices using black, white, and three additional colors drawn from your chosen image. Design your heading typography to harmonize with the overall layout.
Use Adobe InDesign or Affinity Publisher to create your layout, considering how each design choice affects the essay's readability and visual impact.
